Visual Mining NetCharts® Server and Chartworks Designer Help American Superconductor Enhance Customer Responsiveness

American Superconductor's Knowledge Management Application Selected As A Finalist For KM World 's KM Reality Awards 2003

Rockville, Maryland - January 7, 2004 - Visual Mining, Inc., a leading developer of graphical reporting solutions, today announced that a knowledge management application incorporating its NetCharts and Chartworks products has been selected as a finalist in KM World Magazine 's 2003 KM Reality Awards. The application was developed and implemented by American Superconductor (AMSC), a leading electricity solutions company. The KM Reality Awards recognize applications that best exemplify the value gained by the successful implementation of a knowledge management (KM) solution.

The primary goal of AMSC's KM system was to be able to quickly generate actionable, graphical views of the electricity transmission system events detected by AMSC's power grid reliability field units. The KM solution needed to offer simple, repeatable functionality that would be flexible enough to satisfy the different needs of various, geographically-dispersed users. After an exhaustive search of available software tools, AMSC determined that Visual Mining's products had the best fit.

"The dynamic nature of NetCharts Server and its ability to rapidly generate many different types of graphs made it the perfect fit for our Knowledge Management system," said Chuck Stankiewicz, vice president and general manager of American Superconductor's Power Electronic Systems business. "Better and faster analysis through the use of event graphs, helps enhance our efficiency and enables us to provide unmatched customer service. The KM application also sends out email notification of a detected transmission grid event within minutes, which adds tremendous value to the overall solution and shortens our response time. In addition, the KM application's graphics allow us to quickly and easily cross-reference data and provide our customers with a more thorough understanding of grid events."

Visual Mining's interactive graphical reporting solutions, such as those used in the AMSC application, greatly increase the accessibility and usability of data throughout an organization, which improves organizational and operational efficiency and focus.

"American Superconductor has done an outstanding job with this Knowledge Management application, and we're very pleased to be part of it,," said Michael MacDonald, Chief Executive Officer and Founder of Visual Mining, Inc. "Our technical development and support staff take great pride in producing the world's best data visualization tools - American Superconductor's KM application, with KM World's recognition, helps validate the strength of our claim."
